Mars Hill University is a private liberal arts school located in the Blue Ridge Mountains just 18 miles north of Asheville, North Carolina. We have a long tradition of student interest in outdoor recreation and service, and in the spring of 2007 we made the natural progression to create a cycling team. We train on the peaceful yet challenging back roads of Madison County and compete in the Southeastern Collegiate Cycling Conference (SECCC), one of eleven collegiate cycling conferences organized under USA Cycling, the governing body for cycling in the US.
After the Mars Hill cycling tradition started in the spring of 2007, we competed in select SECCC events in 2008, and then saw our first full season of road racing in the spring of 2009, including our first trip to the national championships. School year 2014-2015 marks our eighth year supporting top collegiate student-cyclists.
We compete in national championships in all collegiate disciplines: road, mountain, cyclocross, track, and BMX. Along the way, we’ve collected over 40 national championship podiums, including three national titles on the road, two in cyclocross, and one in BMX. The team consistently tops the DII national rankings, earning the top spot in 2010-2011, 2011-2012, and 2014-2015. USA Cycling recognized our rapid rise up the collegiate ranks by naming us the “Collegiate Club of the Year” in 2010.
We have amazing, lightly traveled, and challenging training roads; are close to some of the best mountain biking in the world (including a new DH park adjacent to campus); are 20 minutes from the closest track (the “Mellowdrome”) and two hours from the state-of-the-art Giordana Velodrome in Rock Hill. For BMX, we have a great track 10 minutes from campus in Weaverville and are within 2 hours of tracks in Columbia and Greenville, SC, as well as the Supercross track in Rock Hill. We have a thriving cyclocross scene with nearby events nearly every weekend from Sept-Jan, including Asheville’s hosting of the 2016 USA Cycling Cyclocross Nationals. We’re also a part of hosting the 2015 and 2016 USA Cycling Collegiate National Road Championships, with the time trial and road race courses only 8 miles from campus, giving our riders the opportunity to regularly train on them.
We believe in the importance of community service, and riders on the team take time away from studying and training to give back to their community in a variety of ways. Our latest effort involves running a weekly mountain bike club for 5th graders at neighboring Mars Hill Elementary, made possible through a partnership with Trips for Kids WNC and Madison County Parks and Recreation. Kids are provided bikes and helmets, and MHU riders instruct the classes.
We have momentum, campus and community support, and the resources to continue growing a stellar cycling team. The only missing ingredient is you!
Mission: To provide collegiate student-cyclists of all abilities the opportunity to race bikes in multiple disciplines in a structured, supportive, and team-focused environment that fosters excellence in character, academics, and athletic performance.
